Weight Loss – Intermittent Fasting Benefits
I have many patients who struggle with weight and get frustrated trying to diet. The best weight loss approaches are not diets but plans for a lifestyle change. Most diets are so restrictive that once the weight loss is achieved people cannot maintain it, but intermittent fasting is relatively simple and easy to maintain. Intermittent fasting is fasting for at least 16 hours a day while eating 8 hours out of the day. Another way is to do a 24 hour fast 2-3 days a week, however, this may be difficult for most people. During Intermittent fasting, insulin levels are reduced and our bodies rely on fat cells as energy sources, therefore, improving metabolism and resulting in weight loss. Also, intermittent fasting can reduce inflammation, help clear out toxins and damaged cells, and enhance brain function. In conjunction with intermittent fasting, I advise my patients to avoid sugars and refined grains, not to snack in between meals that way your body will rely on fat for energy, increase muscle size by weight training and avoid nighttime eating.
