Have you noticed sagging along your jawline or under your eyes? As we age, gravity begins to take its toll, creating jowls, folds, and an overall aging effect. To make it worse, our bodies often lose the fat that gives our faces defined features, and our support structures aren’t as strong as before.

Fortunately, there are quick, non-surgical options to turn back the clock. A thread lift can address issues of sagging without any downtime and with minimal discomfort.

What Is PDO Threading?

PDO threading originated from the ancient practice of acupuncture, which involves the strategic placement of needles to realign the body’s energy and address a variety of health concerns. Although it evolved from medical treatment, thread lift therapy is primarily a cosmetic procedure. Its primary purpose is to tighten sagging skin, thereby giving you a more youthful appearance.

For the past 15 years, PDO threading has been used to treat a range of areas:

  • Neck
  • Jawline
  • Marionette lines
  • Naso-labial folds
  • Forehead
  • Upper and lower cheeks

This treatment isn’t limited to the face; it can tighten skin on the abdomen, arms, and buttocks as well.

When Can PDO Threads be Used?

Threads can be placed in the forehead to lift the brows and also in the temple area to pull the skin and give the “foxy eyes” look. We used threads in the cheeks to soften the smile lines especially when patients don’t want to put filler in the area. We can use it in the lower face to lift and contour the jawline. A thread lift can also be used in the neck but often required multiple threads and sometimes multiple sessions to get the best result. When it comes to the neck, depending on the severity of laxity in the skin, we may recommend combination treatments such as Ultherapy or laser skin tightening procedures to get the best results. Threads can be placed in the body as well, and although they don’t give the same results as the face, often a few sessions are required to see significant improvement.

Are Threads Large or Small?

Large threads are used for lifting the skin as described above,  while small threads are thin hair-like threads that you can use to build volume or structural support anywhere. Many times small threads are used in the smile lines to build volume by stimulating collagen. In addition, these can be used in combination with large threads to give additional support to the skin in the face, neck, jawline, and even in the body. The skin above the knees is particularly popular for small threads, improves creepy skin, and gives skin more support.

How Long Does a Thread Lift Last?

Large and small threads are placed under the skin using local anesthesia, they begin to breakdown or dissolve after 6 months. Results last approximately 1 year.

The procedure is painless.

What to Expect After PDO Thread Lift Treatment?

After the PDO Thread Lift treatment, some swelling is expected and is the greatest after 2-3 days then goes down. We will usually send the patient with a compression garment to minimize swelling. Swelling is usually mild but may be moderate in some areas such as the forehead. Bruising is rare but can happen. The threads are on a cannula so they are less likely to cause bruising. The area may be sore to touch and also sore with some facial expressions or movements. We often recommend not to do any lasers, dental work, or other procedures involving heat or stretch much of the area treated for 4 weeks. Even something as simple as flossing should be done with smaller mouth opening movements. Within 2-3 weeks patients can appreciate the full effect of the threads and see the final result.

What Are Novathreads?

The term “thread lift” may seem intimidating, especially if you’re not familiar with the process. First and foremost, Novathreads are nothing like sewing or craft thread. They’re made of polydioxanone, which is what PDO stands for.

Novathreads are commonly used in surgery since the human body can fully absorb them over time. In fact, polydioxanone is one of the safest substances for internal medical procedures. You may also end up saving money if you choose this alternative, as Nova threads cost much less than a traditional facelift.

How Do Novathreads Work?

Novathreads are preloaded into hypodermic needles to make the treatment process quick and easy. The needles are used to insert the threads beneath the skin, where they’ll gradually be absorbed over the course of four to six months.

During this time, your skin will go to work. The presence of the Novathreads stimulates a selective inflammatory response, which means your body recognizes that it needs to heal itself in that area. This causes your body to create more collagen, which increases your skin’s elasticity and helps you look younger.

What Are the Benefits?

One of the most significant benefits of thread lift therapy is convenience. You don’t have to worry about the obstacles that surgery may present:

  • Time off for recovery
  • Risk of medical complications
  • Potential scarring
  • Need to arrange for travel and care the day of due to sedation

You can make a lunch appointment, get treated, and return to work that same afternoon.

What Can You Expect From the Procedure?

Immediately after treatment, you may notice dimpling or bunching in the area. However, this should go away in a week or so. You may also experience bruising or swelling, but these symptoms typically disappear in less than a week.

Because this treatment relies on the body’s natural healing process, you probably won’t notice any immediate tightening effects. However, as the collagen builds, you’ll start noticing results. Most people see a significant difference after one month. The maximum effects are generally visible by three months and can last up to a year.
