The procedure uses picosecond technology to deliver short bursts of energy into the skin, effectively breaking ink into tiny particles for the body to absorb and remove.This is one of my favorite procedures to perform because of the excellent results in just a short office visit generally spaced 4-6 weeks apart. Depending on the type of ink, how deep it has been placed, and the colors of the tattoo may vary in the number of treatment sessions needed. One of the main concerns with patients is the level of pain experienced with the procedure. My advice is that it depends on a person’s pain threshold. The sensation can be compared to hot oil hitting the skin while cooking, or perhaps rubber bands snapping against the skin. As a medical provider, I always work to minimize any discomfort and allow for a more gentle experience. Topical and local anesthetic are available and I find that using ice during the procedure works well as an analgesic although many of my patients tolerate this procedure without the use of analgesics.
